1. Zoos have been around since 3500 B.C.? In 2009, archeologists found what is believed to be the world’s oldest zoo in Egypt. The exotic animals included hippos, elephants, baboons, and wildcats.

2. It is estimated that over 600 million people visit zoos each year.

3. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has the most visitors with 9.5 million visitors each year.

4. The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in the US. It opened on July 1, 1874.

5. With over 1,500 species, Germany’s Berlin Zoo has the largest variety of animals in any zoo in the world.

6. The oldest running zoo in the world is the Vienna Zoo in Schonbrunn. It was founded in 1752.

7. The total yearly animal food budget at the Sacremento Zoo is $130,000. $30,000 of that is spent on fruits and vegetables which are delivered twice a week.

8. Founded in 1888, the Dallas Zoo was the first Zoo in Texas.

9. Nearly a quarter of the animals at the National Zoo are members of endangered species, and include giant pandas, Asian elephants, white-naped cranes, and western lowland gorillas.
